The Problem: The Environmental Risk of "Driveway Rot"
Many Calgary homeowners leave old vehicles sitting in their back alleys or driveways, unaware of the silent damage they cause. As a car ages and seals perish, hazardous fluids—including lead-acid battery fluid, mercury switches, engine oil, and toxic coolants—can leak into the ground.
During Calgary’s heavy rainfalls or spring thaws, these toxins wash into our storm drains, eventually reaching the Bow River and Elbow River. Simply letting a car “rot” is an environmental hazard.
Citywide Cash For Cars solves this problem. We provide a professional alternative to illegal dumping or hazardous neglect by offering a certified recycling path that follows all Alberta environmental guidelines.
Our Step-by-Step Automotive Recycling Process
We don’t just crush cars; we dismantle them with precision. Our recycling facility follows a rigorous “Green” protocol to ensure that up to 80% of your vehicle is repurposed or recycled.
Fluid Depollution
The most critical step in scrap car recycling is the removal of hazardous liquids. We use specialized equipment to drain and separate:
- Antifreeze/Coolant: Highly toxic to pets and wildlife, this is neutralized and recycled.
- Refrigerants: We capture AC gases to prevent them from entering the atmosphere and damaging the ozone layer.
High-Value Part Recovery
Before the shell is crushed, we identify parts that still have life. Alternators, starters, and body panels are salvaged. By extending the life of these parts, we reduce the energy-intensive demand for new manufacturing, supporting a circular economy in Calgary.
Core Component Recycling
Components like Catalytic Converters are carefully removed. These contain precious metals like platinum and palladium. Similarly, batteries are sent to specialized facilities where the lead and plastic are separated and reused in new battery production.
Metal Reclamation
Once the car is stripped of toxins and reusable parts, the steel and aluminum shell is crushed. This scrap metal is shipped to mills where it is melted down. Did you know that recycling steel uses 75% less energy than producing it from raw ore? Your old clunker could eventually become part of the steel used in new Calgary infrastructure like the Green Line LRT.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the year of the car matter for recycling?
Not at all. Whether it’s a 1990s domestic truck or a 2015 flooded import, the metal and components always have value in the recycling market. My car is full of trash; can you still recycle it?
We ask that you remove all personal belongings and household garbage from the vehicle. We recycle cars, not household waste! A clean car ensures a faster pickup and a better quote.Do I get a tax receipt for recycling my car?
While we are a private buyer (paying you cash), we can provide a certificate of destruction or a Bill of Sale for your records. This is often sufficient for proving the vehicle is no longer your liability. What happens to the tires?
Tires are one of the biggest landfill problems. We ensure that all usable tires are repurposed, while end-of-life tires are sent to Alberta’s tire recycling program to be turned into playground mulch or rubberized asphalt.Join the Green Movement in Calgary
