Bill of Sale for Selling Your Car in Alberta — What You Need and How to Fill It Out
The Government of Alberta provides the official Bill of Sale form (REG3126) free of charge. This is the form AMA Registries and Alberta insurance providers recognize as legitimate proof of ownership transfer.
If you’re selling to Citywide Cash for Cars, you don’t need to download anything. We bring the form to your door at pickup.

What a Bill of Sale Actually Does
A Bill of Sale is the legal document that proves ownership of a vehicle changed hands. It records who sold the car, who bought it, what the car is, when the sale happened, and how much was paid.
In Alberta, you don’t legally have to use the REG3126 form — any document with the right information counts. But the government form is free, accepted everywhere, and protects both sides. There’s no reason to use anything else.
Without a Bill of Sale, your name stays attached to the car. If the buyer racks up tickets, gets in an accident, or abandons the car on a city street, those letters come to you.
What Information Goes on an Alberta Bill of Sale
- Seller and buyer: Full legal names, addresses, signatures, and date. Use names that match each person’s ID.
- Vehicle details: Year, make, model, VIN (17 characters, found on the dash or door frame), body type, colour, odometer reading, and licence plate number.
- Transaction details: Sale price (write it in numbers and words to avoid disputes), date of sale, method of payment, and the phrase “sold as-is, where-is.” That last line protects you from any future complaints about the car’s condition.
Pull all vehicle details directly from the registration to avoid typos. One wrong digit in a VIN delays the buyer’s registration.

What About the Plates?
In Alberta, licence plates belong to the owner, not the vehicle. Pull your plates before handing the car over. You can transfer them to your next vehicle at AMA Registries or surrender them. If you forget, the buyer (or our tow operator) will pull them for you and leave them with you.
Don’t skip this — driving with plates that are still legally yours can create insurance and liability headaches.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a Bill of Sale legally required in Alberta?
Not technically by law — but AMA Registries won't register a vehicle in a new owner's name without one. Practically, you can't transfer ownership in Alberta without it.Where do I get the official Alberta form?
Download it from formsmgmt.gov.ab.ca or pick up a copy at any AMA Registries office. What about a Bill of Sale for a non-running or scrap vehicle?
Same form, same process. The car doesn't have to run. We buy non-running and scrap vehicles across Alberta every day and complete the Bill of Sale at pickup. Can I sell a car I still owe money on?
Yes, but the loan has to be paid off as part of the sale. For higher-value vehicles, Citywide can work with you and your lender directly to handle the payoff at pickup. What if my car is in two names?
Both registered owners need to sign the Bill of Sale and the registration certificate.Does the Bill of Sale need to be notarized?
No. Signatures from both parties are enough. Can I write my own Bill of Sale instead of using the government form?
Yes, as long as it includes seller, buyer, vehicle, price, date, and signatures. The REG3126 form is free and universally accepted, so most sellers just use it.Any More Questions?
