What Your Car Is Actually Worth in Calgary?
Most “cash for cars” pages tell you the price “depends on make, model, year, and condition” and leave it there. That’s not an answer. Here’s the real version.

A scrap car’s price comes from three things:
- Steel weight. Calgary scrap yards pay by the tonne. Alberta steel prices in 2026 are sitting around $200–$280/tonne. A typical sedan weighs roughly 1.3 tonnes, an SUV 1.8–2.2, a half-ton truck 2.0–2.5. That sets the floor.
- Resaleable parts. A 2014 Honda Civic with a working transmission is worth more than a dead 2002 Civic running. Late-model Toyota and Honda parts have a real aftermarket. Older domestics often don’t.
- The catalytic converter. This is the wildcard. A clean cat from a 4-cylinder Toyota can fetch $150–$400. A diesel cat from a Ford or Dodge truck can be $800–$1,500+. A stolen-replacement aftermarket cat is worth almost nothing. If yours is missing or aftermarket, the price drops accordingly.
Rough Calgary payout ranges we see most weeks:
- True scrap — old, rusted, no parts demand, headed straight to the crusher: $200–$500
- Non-running, 2008–2015, common make: $400–$1,200
- Non-running, 2015+, Toyota/Honda/Subaru/late-model truck: $800–$2,500
- Running but rough — drives, won’t pass inspection: $700–$3,000+
- Running, late-model, just unwanted: market price, often $3,000+
These are honest ranges, not bait numbers. The high end requires the right car. If someone quotes you $2,000 sight-unseen for a 2003 Cavalier, they’re going to find a reason to lower it when they show up. We won’t do that.

What Slows a Pickup Down (and How to Avoid It)
If you want same-day cash and a clean handover, have these ready before we arrive:
- Photo ID matching the registration. Alberta requires the registered owner to sign the vehicle over. If the car is in someone else’s name (deceased relative, ex-spouse, a friend), it gets more complicated — call us first and we’ll walk you through it.
- Registration document. Even an expired one helps. If you’ve lost it, AMA Registries can pull a Vehicle Information Report; we can also work with that.
- Keys, if you have them. No keys are fine — we tow regardless — but it can affect the offer because the car may be harder to verify or part out.
- Plates removed. In Alberta, plates stay with the owner, not the car. Pull them off before we arrive (or we’ll do it on-site).
- Lien check. If the car has a lien on it, we can’t buy it until that’s cleared. This catches people off guard. If you’re not sure, look up the VIN on the Alberta Personal Property Registry.
If the car is snowed in, blocked, or unreachable — common in Calgary from November through March — tell us when you call. We have a winch and we’ve pulled cars out of worse, but knowing in advance saves a return trip.

When You Shouldn't Sell to Us
Honest section. If your car is:
- A running, registered, late-model car in decent shape — try Facebook Marketplace or Kijiji first. You’ll get more. We’ll still buy it, but we’re optimizing for speed and certainty, not maximum price.
- A classic or collector vehicle (anything pre-1990 in clean condition, or a low-production performance car) — talk to a specialty buyer. We pay scrap-plus-parts value, not collector value.
- Newer than 2020 with a clean title and minor damage — get an insurance write-off quote first. Sometimes the insurance payout beats both private sales and us.
We tell people this regularly. The cars we’re the right buyer for are the ones nobody else wants to deal with: dead, undriveable, expired registration, sitting in your driveway costing you a bylaw warning, or a junker you just want gone today.
What We Do With the Cars
What this means for you: the car is dismantled or recycled to Alberta Environment standards. Fluids are drained and disposed of properly, the battery and tires are pulled and recycled separately, the catalytic converter goes to a licensed processor, and the steel shell is baled and shipped to a mill. None of it goes to a landfill. If your old Civic ends up as part of a Calgary apartment building’s rebar one day, that’s why.

Frequently Asked Questions
Everything You Need to Know Before Selling Your Car
Why does my friend’s identical car pay more/less than mine?
Usually one of three things: catalytic converter status (missing or aftermarket lowers it a lot), wheels and tires (alloys with decent rubber are worth more than rusted steelies), or scrap metal market timing. Steel prices move week to week.Is the towing actually free?
Yes. It's not deducted from the offer, and there's no separate charge. The price we quote is what you get in cash. How fast is “same-day”?
Honestly: most Calgary pickups happen 2–6 hours after the call, weather and traffic depending. Acreages and outlying areas may push to next-day. We'll give you a real time window when you call, not a stock "same-day" promise. Can I get a refund on my registration after I sell?
Often, yes — if there's significant time left on the registration when you cancel it. Take your bill of sale (we email it to you) to any AMA Registry. The refund amount depends on the remaining months.Do I keep the plates?
Yes — Alberta plates belong to the owner, not the vehicle. Pull them before we arrive, or we'll pull them at pickup. Surrender or transfer them at AMA afterwards. What if the car has a lien?
We can't buy a vehicle with an active lien until the lien is cleared. If you're not sure whether your car has one, you can check via the Alberta Personal Property Registry (a few dollars at AMA). If there is a lien, you'll need to pay it out and get the discharge before we can complete the purchase. What if I don’t have the registration?
We can work with an AMA Vehicle Information Report instead, but the registered owner still has to be the one signing the bill of sale and showing ID. If the registered owner is deceased or unreachable, call us — we'll walk you through what's needed.Do I need to be there for the pickup?
Yes. Whoever owns the car (the name on the registration) needs to sign the bill of sale and show ID. We can't pay anyone else. How much will I get for my car?
See the price ranges above — we don't believe in vague answers. For a firm number, call with the year/make/model/condition and we'll quote you on the phone in five minutes. If we can't see anything obvious that would change the price (hidden frame damage, etc.), the phone quote is the price you get. Will you buy a car that doesn’t run?
Yes. Most of what we buy doesn't run. Non-running cars 2010 and newer typically pay $400–$1,500+ depending on make. We bring the tow truck.Recently Purchased Vehicles in Calgary & Alberta
